Becoming a physical therapist is no easy task and requires years of study and practical hands-on work with patients. In the United States, becoming a doctor with an osteopathic degree requires a four-year undergraduate degree, followed by four years of medical school with heavy science-based schooling and practical training. They may explore residencies or fellowships in order to pursue specific areas of expertise as well.
Read more to see the difference between residencies and fellowships, and why we are proud that both our physical therapists are fellowship-trained:
What is a Residency?
Residency refers to the period of time after medical school has been completed. The doctor may wish to practice independently or pursue more training. Within their residency, they will complete practical work under the guidance of an experienced physician. This program is designed to help the future physical therapist’s preparation as a provider of patient care services in a specific area of clinical practice.
What is a Fellowship?
Fellowships recognized by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists are highly valued as the organization is known for its dedication to excellence in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy practice, education, and research. This program is meant for board-certified therapists and residency graduates that are interested in pursuing subspecialty areas of clinical practice, education, or research.
They must also maintain the following qualifications:
- A specialist certification or completion of a residency in a specialty area
- Substantial clinical experience in a specialty area
- Demonstrable clinical skills within a particular specialty area
